Getting Started

Guidance on getting started as a new believer.

How do you become a Christian?

God made it as simple as possible to get started...

It’s actually extraordinarily simple and easy to become a child of God. This is because God has already done everything He could have to pave the way for us.

In short,

  1. You need to come to the knowledge of the truth and believe that Jesus is God come in the flesh, and was crucified for our sins and resurrected so that we may have eternal life.
  2. Repent, and be baptized. To repent literally means to change your mind and to turn. You’ve realized that you don’t want to live in your sin and live for yourself anymore, so you decide to turn from your wicked ways and turn towards God. It’s a commitment to position your heart towards God and away from yourself from this point onwards. You can think of it as the direction you’re going.
  3. Put your faith in Jesus as your Lord and savior and believe in your heart that Jesus’ blood saves you. This means that you trust God will save you because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, and for Jesus to be your Lord means that you’ve given Him your life.

Now if you are a true Christian then you are a follower and a disciple of Jesus, continuing in your surrender, walking by faith, and your life will show it more and more through your desires and your actions.

What now?

  1. Get baptized (both in water and the Holy Spirit)
    1. It’s really important to understand what baptism means, see Questions
  2. Pursue God and your relationship with Him as the most important thing in your life for the rest of your life. This right here, is truly what it’s all about. There’s nothing more important in your life than this. And it will never change. This should be your greatest pursuit for the rest of your life; to really know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent (John 17:3).
  3. Gain understanding (true heart revelation), receive discipleship, and read the bible (not for knowledge but to get to know God)
    1. The main thing to come to understand is your new identity in Christ
    2. Knowing your new identity will naturally have a huge impact on your relationship with God, but it’s also equally important to gain understanding on how to have a relationship with God
  4. Continue to live in surrender, pick up your cross daily and follow Jesus, and be transformed by the renewing of your mind to become more like Jesus
  5. Love others (even your enemies) as your greatest calling in this life
  6. Go and make disciples of all nations

Discipleship

Ideally a newer believer is discipled by someone who is more mature in their faith.

But this is not a requirement, and our greatest teacher is the Holy Spirit (John 16:13, 1 John 2:27).
