The New Covenant

The new covenant is the first part of the gospel we'll cover.

Jesus came to establish the new covenant according to the promise of God in Jeremiah 31:31-34 so that we could live in the newness of life as children of God. It is this covenant that enables everything included as part of the Gospel of Christ.

What is it?

The new covenant is a covenant that God made with humanity through the sacrifice and blood of His beloved son, Jesus.

It is prophesied in Jeremiah 31 and referenced again in Hebrews 8:

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them
by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke,
though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will
make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts.
And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother,
saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,
declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

There are 3 aspects we can see from the promise:

  1. God will write His law on our hearts
  2. All of God's people will know Him
  3. God will no longer remember our sins

Let's explore each point:

God's law on our hearts

The first point is related to our new righteous nature when we are born again, explored under: Identity in Christ -> Righteousness

We can know God

The second point is related to our relationship with God: Relationship With God -> Knowing God

Our sins are remembered no more

The third point is

Fulfilment of the old covenant

Matthew 5:17
“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
Romans 10:4
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Luke 24:44
Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you,
that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets
and the Psalms concerning Me.”
